Birth Story:
|
At 7:30 am on Saturday (September 28th) I called to the hospital to find out what time to come in for the inducement. The nurse there said when ever I was ready to come on in. I knew I had plenty of time before my IP’s were going to be there so I took my time getting ready. We (my DH and I) arrived at the hospital around 9:00 am and I was hooked up to the monitors. At 9:30 am my doctor came in and checked me I was only 2cm dilated outer, 1cm inner, semi-soft but long. I wasn’t too surprised by this. My IP’s showed up at 10:00 am then 10 minutes later my Doctor gave me ½ of the tiny pill and off we were. I started to feel the effects about 40 minutes later. The contractions were 2 minutes apart and real light but they didn’t bother me at all. My IF talked to my doctor about the cord blood and my doctor took the kit to read it and get everything ready for the delivery. Lisa arrived to the hospital a little later. I spent some time on the monitors and then was able to get up and walk for a while. I was on a time limit (1 hour off, 15 minutes on). Lisa was a little disappointed but was a real trooper and she stayed until about 4:00 then had to head home with her kids.
Around 6:00 pm my contractions hadn’t changed and were starting to get further apart so my doctor gave me another pill. The contractions did become more frequent but they still didn’t get any stronger. The nurse (Amy) was great to me; she would offer me showers every so often to help me to be comforted.
About 9:00 pm my doctor and I agreed that I should get some sleep and then we would try the prostaglandin gel the following morning. So he ordered me some muscle relaxers and a sleeping pill for the night but I didn’t take the sleeping pill. Around 10:00 pm my IP’s went and checked into a motel right next door to the hospital and tried to get some sleep for the night. I tried to sleep though the contractions that I was having because they were so light but I couldn’t, so I took the muscle relaxer at 2:00 am and I slept for a while. My DH stayed at the hospital with me just incase we had a sudden change with my labor.
At 6:00 am, Sunday morning I was wide-awake. I had breakfast (somewhat) and then at 7:30 am my IP’s arrived from the hotel and they were ready to go. My Dr. showed up at 9:00 checked me and applied the gel; I was 3cm inside and 2cm out (which was good news to me). I started to feel the effects of that within 20 minutes. The contractions were much more stronger and stayed about 2 minutes apart. By 2:00 pm I was very uncomfortable. I kept feeling the contractions in my back and I did not want to have to go through another back labor! I over heard the nurse tell someone on the phone that they could go to the county fair and I started to think that must be the anesthesiologist. A minute later I called the nurse over and told her that I wanted an epidural soon! She checked me and said that I was a real soft 3 cm so she called the anesthesiologist and told him to come on in. I kind of felt bad that I called him out of a family day but he wasn’t too worried about it. I was moved into the delivery room where I was given an IV and the epidural. I waited for it to kick in but it didn’t feel as if it was working. I laid on my left side and then I started to feel it kicking in. After a couple of hours I was starting to become uncomfortable again and lying on my side wasn’t helping. So I repositioned the bed so that the feet of the bed was all of the way down and the back was all of the way up. Then I scooted my behind to the edge and put my feet down under me and leaned forward. I had been feeling so much pressure on my tail-bone all of this time and I needed to get him to move. He was still at 3 station even after all of this labor. Well, the new position worked! He moved forward within a few minutes and I was breezing through the contractions as if I wasn’t having them at all! As a matter of fact I wasn’t feeling them! Soon my Dr. came in and he saw me sitting like that and said, Are you comfortable? And I said, Yes, to be honest I’m not even feeling the contractions. He looked a little concerned and then went and read the monitor, he saw I was still having the contractions and then he checked me and said that I was still at 3cm but very soft and finally effacing! We decided that it was time that I get hooked up to the pitocen to help speed things up.
About 4:00 pm I started feeling a lot of pressure on my cervix so I called him back in. My IP’s and DH got real anxious when I did that LOL. Well, I was right! My bag was bulging and I was 4cm (but he was still at 3 station) finally! He discussed with me about breaking my water and I agreed to it. Within a few seconds after he broke my water that little guy kicked out real hard and dropped! The nurse went in to the hall and informed my IP’s of the progress and they were instantly jazzed! As soon as it was done and I was semi-decent again they came back into the room; IM had tears in her eyes and was all hugs and smiles & IF was very nervous now. The nurse started to come in every ½ and hour and turn up the pit and then the epidural at the same time. Within an hour my contractions had started to get even more painful and no matter what position I was in didn’t help. At about 6:00 pm the doctor came in and checked me and I was fully effaced and 6cm dilated. We knew there wasn’t much time now. My Dr. went to get the cord blood kit ready and put on the scrubs. The nurse got the table ready and my IP’s were in total shock. At about 6:30 pm I started to have the urge to push. I began to push but not too hard. By this time my Dr. was sitting in the room waiting for things to get going as we all were and he never once told me not to push because he was still high (-2 station). Then about 6:45 pm I was 10 cm and ready to go, I did have a little lip but the Dr. wasn’t stopping me from doing what I felt was what I needed to do. Within minutes I was feeling his head start to crown and the nurse trying to coax my IM to the foot of the bed to see LOL. So my IM, only after practically being dragged there by the nurse, took a quick glance and back to the head she went LOL. Then at 7:01 pm Tyler made his grand appearance. After the cord was cut the Dr. lifted him off the bed and the nurse held out a blanket for the baby to be wrapped in and then he was handed to Mom. She was all tears and IF could barely hold the camera still. Tyler let out a real big whale of a scream and let everyone one know that he had a very good set of lungs in him! He was a little gurglely so they sucked the fluid out of his mouth but that was all. His apcar score was 8-9 and his weight was 8lbs 11oz and 20 inches long.
The funny thing was, 7:00 was my nurses’ shifts end and she was so worried that she was going to miss the delivery. Here she was there for the labor and thought she was going to miss the birth. She was thrilled that she didn’t though. It took about 20 minutes for the placenta to come so we could collect the blood but all went real nice. I only required two stitches and I didn’t have to be cut!
I tired to pump the colostrum but I couldn’t get any to come so I eventually put him to my breast twice and now I am waiting for my milk to come in so I can send it to them. I wish I had been able to get some while in the hospital and send it with them home but no luck. We both were able to go home this Monday (October 1st). No complications to either of us.
