Birth Story:
On Monday March 24, around 8pm I
started having
contractions. My IP's called just to see how I was doing and how our
Easter
weekend had gone and I told them about the contraction and said I'd let
them
know if anything exciting happened. After a couple hours of
contractions my
best friend and I started keeping track of them cause they were a
little
uncomfortable. In the first hour of timing them while laying down I had
around
11 of them and they were about 6 minutes apart. After the first hour we
decided
that it would be best if I started walking around to see if they
changed any if
I did. Well they got closer like 3 minutes apart and they started
hurting more
so I got off the phone and decided to spend some time on all fours
because my
lower back was feeling achy and I was really tired. Well the
contractions
slowed down a bit and never got more painful so I was able to get a
little bit
of sleep between contractions and all of the moving around that baby
was
doing. The next morning, Tuesday March 25, I gave my OB's office a call
and let
them know that I had been having contractions since last night and that
I had
lost my mucous plug over the weekend. The nurse put me in hold for a
minute so
she could talk to my OB who said for me to come in the office and she'd
take a
look and see how things were going. So I pack my hospital bag and take
a quick
shower (while having contractions) and then Don, Krystal, and I head to
the
OB's office. On the way there I am having contractions 5 minutes apart
and some
of them are a little painful. So they call me back and first check the
belly
and my OB said it feels like he's breech again. I also gave my IM a
call on my
cell and have her on speaker phone so she could hear everything. So she
does an
ultrasound and sure enough he's head up again. She also did some
measurements
and said he looks like he's 8 pounds even. Then she checks my cervix
and gets a
look of shock on her face, we are 5 cms, 100% effaced, and have a
bulging bag
of water! she then tells my IM I hope your packed 'cause were having a
baby
today. So she says that we need to get to the hospital and that she'll
give me
time to see if baby is going to turn again because he's been quite the
wiggle
worm so we get to the hospital and I get my IV and then spend a few
hours on
all fours in hopes of turning this baby boy but in case he doesn't they
also
start prepping everything for a c section. During this time Krystal and
Don
hang out with me and then my SIL arrives at the hospital and takes
Krystal. My
IP's and their 7 year old son get there and then a little while later
the OB
get there and we do another ultrasound (third one of the day) and check
the
cervix again and baby is still breech and I am now 61/2 cm so we all
start
talking about our options for the delivery. My OB and IP's know that
I'm
against a c section so we spend about 25 minutes talking about trying
to
manually turn the baby and the risk that are involved and what would
happen if
he did turn and if he didn't. Only real risk being a placental
abruption which
would mean putting me out instantly and getting baby out right then and
there
and as my OB put it a version usually hurts like hell. So considering
this risk
my IP's , OB, Don and I all decide that it would be best if we attempt
to turn
the baby in the OR just in case. So they take me back and just seeing
everything all laid out puts me in mild panic, but after my OB talking
to me
and taking some deep breaths with me I calm down. So then we start the
version.
They grease up the belly in mineral oil and then my OB and the nurse
try and
get him to turn 3 times and it does hurt a bit but I'm good considering
that I
know if he doesn't that I'm in for a c section. The other nurses in the
OR
comment on how well I'm tolerating them trying to turn him, and the OB
says
Chavonia's really tough and also really doesn't want a c section. After
3 tries
baby boy only went from being head up to being sideways so my OB gives
me a
huge hug greasy belly and all and says I'm so sorry but were going to
have to
do the c section. It made us both feel better to know that we tried to
get him
to turn. So my OB goes to tell Don and my IP's that we couldn't get him
to turn
and then Don and my IM get all scrubbed up and suited up for the c
section.
During this time I get my spinal and that thing was awful! It hurt so
bad that
I'm crying and my super sweet OB is holding my hand and telling me that
it's ok
and that both baby and I are going to be ok.but they finally finished
and then
laid me down and I started feeling really nauseous and the nurse tells
the
anesthesiologist that I'm looking green so he puts some zofran in my IV
and after
about 2 minutes I'm good. Then they bring Don and my IM in and at that
time I
start feeling really calm and kinda sleepy. Then a couple of minutes
later they
start the surgery and I feel all kinds of moving and pulling sensations
and
then they pull little guy out and he starts crying and then my IM and I
start
crying and they wrap him up real quick and I get a look at him and he
is just
adorable and perfect, then they take him away again and weigh him and
he is 8
pounds 1 ounce and 19 inches long at 36 weeks! Then they take him out
of the OR
and IM goes with and they finish sewing me up while Don and I talk and
then
give me some more meds and then wheel me into the recovery room. After
an hour
in there they take me to my room and then my IP's come in and tell me
how
perfect he is and thank you even though it seems so stupid because of
how huge
of a gift I just gave them was. I just smile and says congrats. The
next few
days in the hospital are filled with lots of pain but with some good
times
spent with my IP's and baby Owen. On Thursday night my IP's and Owen go
to the
hotel and then head back home the next morning. Friday afternoon I'm
discharged
as well. So for the last few days I've been at home trying to recover
and was
thankfully given some nice pain medication that has been a god send
considering
that my c section site had been very painful, the spinal has left me
with a
bruise the size of a baseball on my back which really hurts, and with
migraines
that at their worst feel like my head is going to explode and at the
best like
a minor headache, I also have a huge bruise that take up nearly half of
my
forearm where my IV was at. I hope and pray that I'll never have to
have
another c section again. Considering that Owen came into the world by c
section
my OB who does VBAC's is willing to let me have a vaginal delivery as
long as I
wait a year before getting pregnant again. So it looks like my plans
for
another surrogacy in the summer or fall have been done away with but
Don and I
have decided that we are going to try for another one of our own once
my OB
give me the ok. As far as my IP's go I have talked to them 3 times
since I've
been home and they are all doing well. I sent off my first batch of
boobie milk
to them today which they are quite excited about because Owen had
mainly boobie
milk/ colostrum while he was in the hospital and seemed to do really
well with
it but since he's been on formula for the last few days he's been a
little
stopped up so the pediatrician thinks he'll do better once he's mainly
on
breast milk again.
